What is Tissue Typing?
Tissue typing is the process used to match life-saving donors with patients in need of a
Marrow transplant.
All members of the Be The MatchSM marrow registry, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP) are tissue-typed when they join. All patients are typed as well.
The closer the match between the patient’s tissue type and the donor’s, the better for the patient. Patients are most likely to match donors of their same race and ethnicity. That’s why it’s so important for all people of all races and ethnicities to join the Registry.
Saving Lives through Growing a Diverse Registry
Only 1.8 of the 7 million people on the Registry have a racially or ethnically diverse
heritage.
Increasing the diversity of tissue types on the Registry increases the changes for all
patients to get the life saving transplant they so desperately need.
The Cost of Tissue Typing
There is always a cost for the tissue typing lab test, whether an individual, a sponsor, a granting Foundation, the Be The MatchSM Foundation or Kids Beating Cancer, pays for it. No one can join for free.
The nationally discounted Lab cost to tissue type every new Registry member is $100.
Kids Beating Cancer has access to limited funding to cover the cost of tissue typing for racial and ethnic minorities through grant funds from the National Marrow Donor Program to help increase the diversity of the Registry.
Kids Beating Cancer does not have enough support to cover tissue-typing costs for everyone who wants to join. That’s why we need ongoing financial support so we never have to turn anyone away for lack of funds. Your contribution makes it possible for more people to join the Registry and for us to save more lives.
Kids Beating Cancer is a non- profit organization. We depend on public support to help underwrite the cost of tissue typing so all people interested in offering hope and cure for any patient, can join the Registry, a cost not funded by insurance. A Marrow transplant can potentially cure 72 different diseases. The National registry is searched 6,000 a day. and over 400 transplants with unrelated volunteer donors are facilitated every month.
Our goal is by 2015 to facilitate 10,000 transplants in one year.
