The year was 1940 and America had just awakened from a ten-year hangover, better known as the Great Depression. Europe was at war, but the American café society elite wanted to party. The supper club was now the nightlife entertainment of choice (there were no televisions), the successor to the prohibition speakeasies. “New York was where the rich and famous came to play”. From the time Copacabana burst on the scene in 1940 it soared to a reputation as the best-known nightclub in Manhattan & the most popular nightspot in America - a cultural icon that symbolized everything glamorous & sophisticated.
These economic times have hit us all. I understand your ability to give charitable financial gifts may be limited this year, however, the Florida children with cancer and those yet to be diagnosed this year continue to need our services to receive the treatment of choice. Please choose one of our payment plans. Together we can give these kids the HOPE for a CURE that they deserve! Thank you for your support!

Michael Andrew Atomic Big Band Notes...
Michael Andrew has always loved swing music. In
1990, he formed "The Michael Andrew Orchestras" with the goal of providing timeless music in the style of the big bands of the forties and in the tradition of popular singers like Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra. In 1993, the world famous Rainbow Room in New York City invited Michael to become their headlining singer and band leader. In 1998, Andrew created his dynamic band Swingerhead that won the Best Band award for 4 years in a row. In 2000, Andrew formed his Los Angeles based band, The Coconut Club Orchestra. They performed at the Coconut Club in Merv Griffin's Beverly Hilton every Saturday night. Michael is currently working with Jerry Lewis developing the Broadway production of The Nutty Professor. |

The Michael Andrew Atomic Big Band was formed in 2002 and their debut performance was a Tribute to Frank Sinatra at the Plaza Theatre in Orlando, Florida. Michael was inspired by the sound of Count Basie's Big Band and his " Atomic Sound". In 2006 Michael and his Atomic Big Band performed at the world premier of Poseidon at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California. The 18-piece band consists of 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxophones, a guitarist, a bassist, a drummer, a pianist, and the incomparable Michael Andrew. The power of the horns and the dynamic contrast of the swinging rhythm section define the characteristics of the band. Michael will take you on a musical journey few have traveled. See him live at Hats & Martinis for Hope!
Message from Margaret Guedes:
Dear Friends of Kids Beating Cancer,
Dear Friends of Kids Beating Cancer:
Take a look at these kids. Anyone of these children could be your child or your grandchild. I know these hard economic times have hit us all. Budgets are slashed; there are freezes on hiring. We all have to prioritize our finances. I understand your ability to give charitable financial gifts may be limited this year. Sadly however, the Florida children with cancer and those yet to be diagnosed this year – the children whose future depends on us, continue to need our services to receive the treatment a life-saving marrow transplant. Kids Beating Cancer is the first step for all children in need of a transplant to receive the hope they need. Every child diagnosed with cancer deserves the best chance for treatment. Kids Beating Cancer’s unyielding dedication is to continue to fight for these kids, working to provide hope and deliver a cure to each and every Florida child with cancer. Our ability to continue our work depends on the generosity of people like you.
On behalf of the ill children in our community that are alive today because of our community and corporate support, thank you for your compassion and generosity. In these uncertain economic times, Kids Beating Cancer needs you even more to continue its life-saving work. It is only with the on-going support from people like you that donors can be identified in time for the 70% of children who will not find a compatible match in their family this year. Families rely on us to increase their child’s chance of identifying that perfectly matched donor, allowing them to receive the transplant that can cure their disease. How could anyone not want that for these children? It is in our grasp, we can give these kids life, but we need you to make it happen.
Kids Beating Cancer’s Hats & Martinis for Hope gala purpose is to raise the dollars needed to help children with cancer in need of marrow transplantation have the best opportunity for a cure. We strive to have a fun, entertaining, unique event, so you will not only return because of the children, but because you had a great time. We need a break from all the gloom and doom on the news, so I hope you will ‘Meet me at the Copa’. We can sip martinis and cocktails with Dean and friends, dine on gourmet hors d'oeuvres and desserts with Lucy and Ricki and other Celebrities, and swing to the music of Central Florida’s legend, Michael Andrew and his Atomic Big Band. 3 or 6-month payment plans are available. See you there…don’t forget your HAT!
A simple gift of a bottle of wine could make a world a difference in the life of a child with cancer. How you must be wondering. If you love wine like Ben and I do, especially good wine, you can appreciate what crazy wine lovers like us would pay for an assortment of special wines. Especially with the unique knowledge that each bottle contributed was from people who believe that children with cancer in need of a transplant should have the best possibility for a cure. You can be a part of that cure. I know that each of you has already done so much for Kids Beating Cancer... but if you could donate a bottle from your wine cellar, cupboard shelves (or where ever you hide the good stuff) or stop by a wine shop and pick up a wine that you love, and before you donate it to Kids Beating Cancer attach a note as to why you love it. Maybe you had it on a special occasion, a special trip, a night you won't forget, or you just love the taste... then KBC will auction this special wine collection during the live auction at Hats & Martinis for Hope. If you can't drop a bottle off at KBC's offices please bring the vino with you to Hats & Martinis and turn it into Registration. I believe this could raise a lot of money and start a special KBC tradition. Wine to Wipe Out Cancer... I'll drink to that! Thank you for believing in the mission of KBC.
Warmest Regards,
Margaret Guedes, CEO & Founder
